After a humiliating 1-0 shock defeat five days earlier against Costa Rica, Scotland knew victory was vital for progression to the second phase of the world cup. Many thought Scotland were incapable of getting even a point out of a fine Swedish side however Scotland surprised everybody with an efficient and remarkable performance. McCall gave Scotland an early tenth minute lead which set the tone for a great performance. After dominating most of the match, Scotland went further ahead with seven minutes remaining from time when Mo Johnston scored from a penalty kick. Johnston came close to scoring a third immediately after however Stromberg pulled a goal back for the Swedes with few minutes remaining however the Scots ran out 2-1 deserved winners restoring pride into the Scottish team.

Scotland 2-1 Romania

A very small crowd at Hampden witnessed Scotland at first struggle against a well organised Romanian side who took an early lead with a highly dubious goal by Camataru. With minutes remaining before half time, the Hearts player, John Robertson, equalised and, in the second period, Scotland dominated play for match of the match. Ally McCoist pinched a winner in the last 15 minutes as Scotland embarked upon their finest ever European Championship campaign.

Despite Scotland being eliminated from Euro 92 due to their two previous defeats at the hands of the might Germany and Dutch, they went out of the tournament in the most emphatic fashion with a brilliant victory over the CIS. Scotland took the lead after only six minutes and continued t dominate the match, Brian McClair scored in the 17th minute to make the score line 2-0 and the Scots continued to dominate possession. The CIS were only able to create few half chances and the match went in at half time 2-0 to Scotland. After half time, the Russians brought on two substitutes and, for a while, threatened to get back into the match, however their threat was effectively countered by the substitution of McCoist and Gallacher. In the 83rd minute, Scotland scored a third when McAllister put away a penalty kick and Scotland won 3-0.
