Gordon Strachan
International debut – 9th February 1957 V Northern Ireland

After spending three years with Dundee, he signed for Aberdeen in 1977. In his seven year spell at Aberdeen, he appeared on 183 occasions, scoring a total of 55 goals for the Dons, he followed his spell at Aberdeen, moving to Manchester united in 1984. His five years at Manchester United saw him appear 160 times for the club, scoring 33 goals. Strachen made his international debut for Scotland in 1980 and soon became a regular. He played in the 1982 and 1986 world cup finals, scoring one goal in the world cup finals. He was part of the Leeds united said which won the English league championship in the 1991-92 season.

 

Richard Gough
International debut – 30th May 1983 V Switzerland

Gough started off his career at Dundee united, and during his six seasons at Tannadice, Gough matured into a player of true class. Playing at right back, he made tremendous progress up the football ladder. By the end of the 1985-86 season, Gough had been voted player of the year by his fellow Scottish professionals and featured for Scotland in the 1986 world cup finals. Gough moved to Tottenham during the 86-87 season, playing 49 matches for the football club. Twelve months later, he moved to Glasgow Rangers and the honour soon came rolling in. He was included in the Scottish side of the 1990 world cup finals.

 

Paul McStay
International debut – 21st September 1983 V Uruguay
Number of Caps – 76

McStay commenced his career with Celtic at the tender age of 17. Celtic won the Scottish league title at the end of McStay's first season at the club; the young player injected the extra zest needed to sustain a winning team over a lengthy season. McStay won his first international cap for Scotland in a 2-0 victory over Uruguay in 1983, and missed few games since. McStay played for Scotland in the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals.

 

Steve Nicol
International debut – 12th September 1984 V Uruguay
Number of Caps – 27

His dazzling performances whilst playing for yr united earned him a transfer to Liverpool for £300,000 in 1982. In his first two seasons playing for the club, Nicol only made a handful of appearances and when he did feature he was in an unfamiliar midfield role. However his name started appearing on the score sheet, and he had won the league and league cup by the end of the 83-84 season. Nicol grew in stature as Liverpool tightened their stranglehold on English football. Steve Nicol was arguably one of Scotland’s greatest ever players. He made his international debut in 1884 in a 6-1 drubbing of Yugoslavia in 1984and was in impressive form during the 1986 world cup finals. Nicol also played an integral part in Scotland’s Euro 92 campaign.
