Scotland did not enter the European Nations cup of 1960 or 1964 and neither the 1962 or 1966 world cup finals, however after the 1966 world cup; they emerged as a much stronger football action after many years of exile from playing great football in the international scene. Scotland beat England at Wembley in 1967 and was emerging as one of the best footballing nations in Europe. Scotland were impressive while attempting to qualify for the 1968 European championships. After a draw away at Wales they comfortably beat Northern Ireland at home. After beating Wales at home, Scotland only needed to beat England at home to secure qualification, however a draw was the end product and they had just failed to qualify of the 1968 European Championships. In qualifying for the 1970 world cup finals, Scotland struggled to qualify but with reason. They had been drawn in the same group as West Germany, the beaten finalists of the 1966 world cup, and Austria. Scotland’s faint hopes vanished when they drew 1-1 with West Germany at Hampden, lost 3-2 in Germany and lost 2-0 playing Austria in Vienna. However despite not qualifying they did finish runners up in their group, edging out Austria by one point which handed them with confidence for the future.
