Scotland Football>Scotland Managers

Bobby Brown
Managerial period – 1967 -1971
Bobby became manager of Scotland in 1967, and his debut match as manager was a famous 3-2 victory over England. However under his reign they failed to qualify for either the European Championships or World Cup. Quite frequently his Scotland squad was depleted by domestic team demands and the results suffered as a consequence.

Willie Ormond
Managerial period – 1973-1977
Ormond was appointed manager in 1973 and did not disappoint during his time. He had a great squad at his disposal including the likes of Kenny Dalglish and Graham Souness and he helped them reach the 1974 world cup finals. However they were eliminated in the group stage and they failed to reach the European Championships under him. He guided them through the early stages of qualification for the 1978 world cup finals; however he resigned in May 1977.

Andy Roxburgh
Managerial period – 1986 – 1993
Roxburgh took charge just after the 1986 world cup finals, and his start was slow as they failed to reach the Euro 88 finals. In qualifying for Italia 90, Scotland was in terrific form, and he helped them beat the likes of East Germany and France comfortably to secure qualification. Unfortunately for Roxburgh and Scotland they failed to get past the group stage, stumbling against Costa Rica along the way. In qualifying for Euro 92, Roxburgh’s team were playing amazingly well, topping what seemed to be a tricky group comprising of Bulgaria, Romania and Switzerland. In the finals it self they played heroically well, including a 3-0 humiliation of the CIS, however they were knocked out in the group stage.

Craig Brown
Managerial period – 1993 – 2002
Brown took charge of Scotland just as they realised that they had not qualified for the 94 world cup finals in USA. He steered them through their Euro 96 qualifying campaign as they finished second in their group, securing a place in the competition. In the tournament itself, he was unable to guide them past the group stage, despite acquiring four points in the process. Qualification for France 1998 was done in an easy fashion, comfortably qualifying from a group including Austria and Latvia. Brown could once again not guide his team past the group stage again in a major competition, this time losing against Morocco and Brazil. Brown managed Scotland during the Euro 2000 qualification process, this time they finished second in their group and they were required to beat England in a two legged playoff, after a disappointing 2-0 defeat, a 1-0 victory over their arch rivals away at Wembley was not enough to see Craig Browns team through to Euro 2000. After a poor record during qualification for the 2002 world cup finals, Brown resigned as Scotland manager.

Berti Vogts
Managerial Period – 2002- 2004
Overall Berti Vogts record as manager of Scotland was a disaster. His reign as manager started as it finished, a 2-2 draw with the Faroe Islands, and things became little better as they lost in a Euro 2004 qualifier to Lithuania. They narrowly finished second in their group, and after a surprising 1-0 win in a playoff match to Holland at home, Vogts team were brought right back down to earth as they were thrashed 6-0 in the return leg. Things went from bad to worse after that, as Scotland had embarrassing 4-0 and 3-0 defeats against Wales and Hungary respectively, and his first few matches in charge of Scotland during the qualifiers for the 2006 world cup finals were unacceptable. They lost at home to Norway and could only manage a poor 1-1 draw away to the weakest team in the qualifying group, Moldova. Vogts left the post as Scotland football manager straight after that.

Walter Smith
Managerial period – 2005 –
Smith has injected a huge ray of hope in Scotland, as their results and performances have gradually improved since he took over as manager. An impressive 1-1 draw against the future world champions, Italy was the start of his good record as Scotland pulled off a fine victory away to Norway and thrashed Slovenia 3-0 at home. Scotland also thumped Bulgaria in a friendly in May 2006, which was Scotland’s biggest victory in years.
